AWS named as leader in the 2015 Gartner Cloud Magic Quadrant (IaaS) for the 5th consecutive year

In the 2015 Gartner Cloud Magic Quadrant, Worldwide, Gartner placed Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the “Leaders” quadrant and rated AWS as having both the furthest completeness of vision and the highest ability to execute.

AWS invests in maintaining their position in cloud with an accelerating pace of innovation, a focus on operating efficiently at massive scale, and growing an expansive customer and partner ecosystem. AWS works closely with industry leaders to help them transform their existing businesses at a pace that cannot be duplicated with traditional infrastructure alternatives. Even with their nearest competitors investing heavily in their IaaS offering, why are AWS so far ahead?

Early bird gets the worm

Amazon started working on AWS eleven years ago and have been in the market for over nine. This makes Amazon Web Serves the longest running cloud services provider. One of the reasons Amazon started working on AWS was because they had to get really good at running reliable scalable infrastructure services deep in the stack, with reliable scalable data centres to run their retail business. Nine years later after being in the market with every imaginable use case and over 1 million customers Amazon are MUCH better at that today than they were nine years ago. There is no compression algorithm for experience There is no compression algorithm for experience. There just isn’t. And you can’t learn many of the lessons that Amazon have learnt in this cloud business until you get to different levels of scale, and nobody else has reached this level of scale as well.

AWS’s popularity is uncontested

AWS has a diverse customer base and the broadest range of use cases, including enterprise and mission-critical applications. It is the overwhelming market share leader, with over 10 times more cloud IaaS compute capacity in use than the aggregate total of the other 14 providers in this Magic Quadrant. This has enabled it to attract a very large technology partner ecosystem that includes software vendors that have licensed and packaged their software to run on AWS, as well as many vendors that have integrated their software with AWS capabilities. It also has an extensive network of partners that provide application development expertise, managed services, and professional services such as data center migration.

AWS is a thought leader

AWS is extraordinarily innovative, exceptionally agile, and very responsive to the market. It has the richest array of IaaS features and PaaS-like capabilities. AWS continues to rapidly expand its service offerings and offer higher-level solutions. However they are beginning to face more competition from Microsoft and Google, AWS retains a multiyear competitive advantage. Although AWS will not be the ideal fit for every need, it has become the “safe choice” in this market, appealing to customers who desire the broadest range of capabilities and long-term market leadership. AWS is the provider most commonly chosen for strategic adoption.

As useful as the 2015 Gartner Cloud Magic Quadrant is, another way to measure AWS’ lead is by adoption. And in this category, AWS blows everyone else away.

According to Gartner, while in 2014 AWS offered 5X the utilized cloud capacity of its next nearest 14 competitors combined, in 2015 AWS delivers over 10X the utilized cloud capacity of its largest 14 competitors combined.
